Fertile Rock – New Video

Sometimes all it takes is a song…
With the song ‘Fertile Rock’ by Luka Bloom a beautiful and unique connection was created in 2012 and continues to this day between a Danish Choir, an Irish musician, and a mountain in The Burren, Co. Clare…

“Ah, the travels of songs.
I love how some songs seem to grow mystical wings and find themselves landing in exotic places……… like Denmark.
Fertile Rock comes from 1992, during a time when people gathered to protect a sacred mountain in the Burren in County Clare.
There were plans to bring mass tourism to the area, and these developments would have changed the nature of the area forever.
Many people gathered, and their weapons were songs, poems, films, stories and music. And some law.
In the end, the development never happened. Mullaghmore remains mysterious and a little ‘off-track’.
People come, but not in big buses………
I wrote this song for the mountain, and never imagined the song would be sung in faraway places.
And yet, here it is, in its original version, being sung by Osterbro Pigekor from Copenhagen.
They sing the original words, which has a verse about the struggle of the 1990s to protect the mountain.
About 10 years ago, I changed the second verse, to acknowledge that the mountain remains exactly as it did generations ago. Untouched.

Østerbro Pigekor have done something very special with this song.
They have created a beautiful interpretation, which literally brings me to the mountain when I hear them sing it.
Now they have created this gorgeous video.
And their video is a collage of flowing photographs.
These photographs are works of art, created by Hanne T. Fisker.
Hanne lives beside the Burren in county Clare now.
She photographs the Burren like nobody else.
Somehow she manages to take photographs with her heart.
And so the choir and Hanne become the perfect marriage of art and song.
I am so grateful to Marlene, Hanne and the wonderful young women of Østerbro Pigekor for this gift they have given to my song.
Here is the ‘new verse’, not in this version:”

‘In the flowering desert
Anam Cara echoes around
And people go walking
The limestone’s holy ground’.
